West Harlem

West Harlem, encompassing the area from 123rd to 155th Streets to the west of St. Nicholas Avenue, is a tapestry of cultural history, academic institutions, and urban renewal. This neighborhood includes the sub-districts of Hamilton Heights, Sugar Hill, and Manhattanville, each with its own unique identity. West Harlem is celebrated for its contributions to the Harlem Renaissance, an intellectual and cultural revival of African American music, dance, art, and literature during the 1920s and 1930s. Today, it offers a mix of charming brownstones, new residential developments, and cultural institutions like the Apollo Theater. The presence of City College and Columbia University's expansion into Manhattanville has infused the area with an academic vibrancy, alongside its historical and cultural richness.
